Jean-Pierre Bourguignon earned his engineering degree from École Polytechnique in 1966 and a doctorat d’État ès mathématiques from Université Paris VII in 1974. He was a fellow at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique from 1969 to 2013. He also served as a Professor at École Polytechnique from 1986 to 2012 and directed the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques from 1994 to 2013. Additionally, he presided over the Société Mathématique de France (1990-1992), the European Mathematical Society (1995-1998), and the European Research Council (ERC) (2014-2019, with an interim role from July 2020 to August 2021). Currently, he's a member of the Committee on Publishing for the International Mathematical Union and part of the task force monitoring potential governance changes for arXiv.
